Biography of an Artist
Travel,
music, media and technology, are what drive and inspire Kwame. A fine and
commercial artist, his particular passion is in animation and its development
in Africa. Kwame worked as an animation trainer and project coordinator
for the UNESCO's Africa Animated! Project for several years. He also
established the animation department at Ambatana Educational Trust (in partnership
with Jacaranda Designs), as well as taught drawing workshops with the African
Sky Art Institute, Nairobi Institute of Technology, the African Digital
Graphics Forum (in association with Pixelcorps) and others. He also contributes
to the online resource for African art, African Colours.
He is the current interim chairperson of the Association of Animation Artists Kenya (A3), which hosted its inaugural event 'Genesis' in August 2009. Kwame also worked as a computer art director on the Disney/BBC children's TV series 'Tinga Tinga Tales' by Tiger Aspect, released in July 2010. Kwame creates children's books as well, most notably 'A Tasty Maandazi'.
A graduate of Haverford College and the Academy of Art University in the USA, Kwame interned in the art department of Industrial Light and Magic, working on projects such as George Lucas's 'Star Wars: The Phantom Menace', as well as Clint Eastwood's 'Space Cowboys'. Currently, he works at the creative house Apes in Space in Nairobi, as well as serves clients in Kenya and around the world.
